Breast cancer: why prevention is an act of love

Marta always looked after everyone. Her sick mother, the children with their schoolwork, her exhausted husband, even a friend in need of someone to talk to. But taking care of herself? That was always left for later. It was during a routine exam, booked almost at her sister’s insistence, that she heard the words so many women fear: “There’s something here we need to investigate further.”

What saved Marta? Prevention.

Breast cancer in numbers that speak for themselves

Breast cancer remains the most common type of cancer among women in Portugal. It is estimated that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed at some point in their lives. But there’s an even more important figure: when detected early, the chances of a cure exceed 90%. That’s why talking about prevention isn’t about fear — it’s about life.

Prevention is love (for yourself and others)

How often do we put our health last? We book everything for our children, parents, work, and forget that without health… there is nothing. Preventing breast cancer is an act of self-care, but also one of love for those around us. Because those who love, care — and that starts from within.

What are the key steps for prevention?

  1. Breast self-exam

Once a month, ideally one week after your period. A self-exam does not replace clinical exams, but it helps you get to know your body and detect any changes.

  1. Annual clinical exam

Regular visits to the doctor allow for a professional evaluation and personalised guidance.

  1. Screening mammogram

Recommended from age 50 (or earlier in high-risk cases), it's the main ally for early detection. In Portugal, screening is free in many regions — but still, many women don’t take advantage of it.

  1. Healthy lifestyle

Balanced diet, regular physical activity, quality sleep, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco all reduce the risk of developing the disease.

  1. Know your family history

Having close relatives with breast or ovarian cancer can increase your risk. In these cases, monitoring should be even more careful and start earlier.

What if there is a diagnosis?

Fear is natural, but early diagnosis changes everything. Treatment options are increasingly effective, less invasive, and offer better prognoses. Today, living after breast cancer is a common reality — thanks to science, but above all, thanks to the courage to prevent.

To men: yes, this also concerns you

Although rare, breast cancer can also affect men. Pain, a lump, or changes in the male breast should always be evaluated. Shame must never be greater than the will to live.

Pink October: more than a month, a movement

Pink October is a reminder. A pink light that shines on buildings, on social media, and in our minds. A collective call: don’t delay any longer. Book the appointment. Do the exam. Talk to that friend who keeps postponing it. Give your time, your attention, your kindness — and your information.

Conclusion: taking care of yourself is the most generous gift you can give

Preventing breast cancer is not just a personal responsibility. It’s an act of self-love, empathy, and generosity. Because when you care for yourself, you protect yourself. And when you protect yourself, you live longer — and better.
